Paul Sermon, “Telematic Embrace” (1993): A series in which the artist projected images of reclining figures onto comfort furniture such as beds and couches. As you can see from the image above, there are several variations of the project. Edward Shanken’s description of the project:

"Inspired in part by the notion of the ‘self-as-screen’ theorized by Jean Baudrillard in The Ecstasy of Communication (1986), Telematic Dreaming creates a hybrid space that joins real and virtual forms of presence and pushes the limits of human perception and communication. Two remote locations, A and B, contain a bed, a video camera and a projector, and are connected by a high-speed telecommunications line. In each location, video of the person lying in bed is captured and projected on the bed in the other location, so the person in A sees the person in B lying with them in bed, and vice-versa. Although one knows, intellectually, the other person is not physically there and despite the fact that communication can take place only by gesture (there is no sound), the virtual, telematic presence of an other in one’s midst - and on one’s sheets - can evoke very strong emotional responses. The bed and its occupants become a screen and a stage, which complicates its highly charged semiotic coding as a personal, intimate and erotic place. The work’s title also suggests an in-between state between sleeping and being awake, between immediate physical presence and remote telepresence. This provocative digital encounter challenges conventional notions of space, time and privacy.” (Edward A. Shanken, Art and Electronic Media, p. 128)
